Control Line Modelling

Members of Thunderbirds AeroModellers have flown control line model aircraft on the Bracken Ridge Road cleared site (now within the Deagon Wetland Conservation Area) since the 1960’s. Our club became incorporated in the same era as the BCC purchased a large parcel of ground (which included our site) with “green levy proceeds”. The purchase was from the Catholic Church for whom our members had regularly sprayed weeds (Groundsel) within adjacent wetland. (also in closer proximity to St John Fisher College, which had controlled the area)
Control line flight is the only branch of aeromodelllng which provides direct physical feedback between the pilot and the modeller. i.e. You can “feel” how the model is behaving via the tension and “vibes” in the lines connecting the control handle in your hand to a triangular bell-crank within the model. The bell-crank connects to, and mechanically moves, the elevator (and sometimes wing flaps) on the aircraft.
Various types of model are flown either for fun or competition up to World Championship status in categories of SPEED, RACING, AEROBATICS, and COMBAT. Our club does not cater for SPEED (too noisy for our 96 db max. noise limit which also eliminates some categories of RACING and COMBAT).
Our specialty in recent times is having fun In a relaxed environment each Sunday morning from 9:00 am (weather permitting – only rain, extreme wind, or participation in major aeromodelling or community events such as Sandgate’s Einbunpin Festival keeps us away).
